For my Valentine... :-)

  1. Hi Joe. I always smile when I see your work. The eyes really do something, add that interaction between your 'animals' and make them exist in their own world.

The code for me to post my comment is 'oughfies"...

  2. Hi Andrew, that's what I was hoping for... They are in their own world. I try to in inject some warmth or humour into the images to give them another level rather than just simply "this is gothic" or "this is serious" and so on (although sometimes that simplicity can be fun too). So I'm happy when people smile at my work! Good to see your new work, by the way.

  3. Thanks Joe, we have a chap in Oz called Leunig who has the same pithy way of approaching subject matter as you do in some of his work. Quite often it is sad/happy/funny/poignant.

    ceehrs err I mean 'cheers"

  4. Hi Joe, hope you are keeping well and making more art!

Here is something for you, a blog award!

Just what you always wanted? Hmmm... it will give you a chance to name for favourite artists ... seven I believe, and to tell a few untruths.

    Good luck.

    Andrew :)

  5. Wow, thanks Andrew, kinda annoying and flattering simultaneously :-) Haha... I suppose I should do the tasks now...

  6. Anyway, some lies and one truth:
The only person I speak directly to is David Bowie; I have no tattoos; I am on first name terms with Robert Smith of The Cure; I was personally responsible for saving the Seychelles Magpie-Robin from extinction; I have never dressed up as a pirate; I have travelled in 13 countries; I have an undisciplined but loyal militia based on the London/Kent border.

  8. Heh, well I like your myths. I think that you have travelled in 13 countries while being dressed as a pirate.

Telling lies is a great way to generate stories; and stories beget illustrations sometimes. And other times the other way round.

I like the other way round best!

    cheers

  9. Hi Lakhsmita! How are you these days...?? Your work is looking superb as always :-)

Andrew, you are right (but maybe not about the myths...? Hehe)! I am having a hard time finding inspiration at the moment, maybe listening to a few tall stories might help...

Images and stories seem intertwined, at least for the three of us in our illustrations, maybe we are really storytellers first and foremost?

And it's true, I find the illustrations start with one idea and then a whole new story can emerge while you are working or afterwards, and this is always good fun.
    See you, J

  10. ;-) I can only give one answer to that question: my beautiful girlfriend! Don't get me into trouble, haha!

Saw your recent blog post btw, very nice and gothic...

  12. Ps - it must have made your girlfriend very happy! Did you frame it?

  13. Hello Cheryl! Thank you, good to see you here... well, I made it into a card so I didn't frame it. She liked it, which is the main thing ;-) I started off with the idea to make it dark and gothic but in the end the gentle humour won through, I don't think this kind of card should be too dark!

  14. Okay...I see what you mean about a dearth of posts. But I'm sure you'll get back in the game too. I wanted to say that I really really like your last post about nightmares. That's so true. You'd think you'd get over that when you get older (isn't being afraid of the dark a kid's thing?), but I know I have those moments. The drawing is beautifully dark and nightmarish.

  15. And I really like this drawing too. What a great valentine, with its ghostly twist. I have to admit that it made me smile too.

  16. Thanks Coreopsis, I appreciate your comments and I'm really happy that you liked these illustrations. I'm halfway through 2 new images, so I'm getting back on track now, I hope!
